Mel Johnson grew up learning what wood could do before he ever thought of himself as an artist. He learned it from his father on a Utah farm, refined it over a decade teaching carpentry to high school students, and spent a career turning it into cabinets and custom homes for other people's lives. Retirement gave him something different — the chance to make something entirely his own. He began gathering fallen oak from the mountains of Utah, drawn to wood that had already lived a full life, and started asking what it still had left to say. This double-heart sculpture is one of the answers. Carved entirely by hand from a single piece of Utah oak, it rises from a solid rectangular base into two arching forms — a larger outer heart and a smaller suspended inner one, hung on brass hooks so it rests lightly, almost breathingly, within the larger frame. At the center of that inner heart sits a heart-shaped window, sized for a photograph. Mel finished it in time for Valentine's Day, and there's something fitting about that — a piece built around the idea that love deserves to be held, framed, and given a form worthy of it. The oak itself does much of the talking. The grain moves through the curves like something living, darkening at the edges, glowing warm at the center, catching light the way only hand-finished wood can. Whoever fills that heart-shaped window with a photograph will find the wood does something unexpected — it makes the image feel permanent, rooted, like it belongs to something that will last far longer than a printed photo ever could.
